From Good to Better

10 June 2008 - Sorry to be so long between posts but we have not been idle since our last post. I will try to catch you up on what has been going on and share some of the views and history of the area.

We had chosen a location in this area based entirely on the Internet and can share some or the pros and cons of this popular approach to travel. The first views below reflect the setting of the facilities and are exactly what we expected. In addition the managers of the lodge and park are great Christian people and a pleasure to be around.

This is the office and restaurant (plus the largest gift shop in the area!). It sits back against the mountain surrounded by cottonwood trees (hence the name Cottonwood Cove).

This is our fifth wheel and our neighbors showing the surrounding mountains. Beautiful setting and we had clouds, snow and cool weather in the first few days on site.

The resort being right on the Rio Grande river offers the opportunity to watch the ducks and geese in their coming and going. I had seen these a couple of time and finally had Becky AND the camera along at the right time.

We watched the parents herd the little ones for awhile and they finally decided there was too much human attention around and got everyone into the river and floated away. The Rio Grande is REALLY flowing at present due to snow melting and they were out of sight in no time!

Next to the river is an old railway track. A guy bought it several years ago with plans to develop it into a tourist attraction running from down south up the river to the great views. So far he has only managed to keep the tracks in good enough shape to run the maintenance cars but has also restored the old station shown here.

OK, you have seen the good - now for the bad (and the ugly). Shown in the following photos is why we are no longer at this location. The place is just now under new owners/managers and the manager hopes to change all this. We wish them all the best!

This was the view out our rear window!! No other comment required.

We could have moved over a space and had this view of old appliances and storage areas - not much improvement.
