More Nashville (Indiana)

In addition to the houses, we also were delighted with the flowers we found in the gardens (or flower beds if you wish). As you can see they were in full bloom and many reminded us of English gardens and made us homesick. We consoled ourselves with a cup of tea (not Yorkshire) and a locally made ice cream cone. On our way back to Bloomington we thought we would stop and check out one of the Indiana State Parks in case we were through that way again and wanted a different venue. We stopped at the entrance and explained to the attendant that we wished to drive through the campground and have a look at the sites. She insisted we cough up $5 to use their roads. We explained we did not wish to use any of their facilities and promised not to even get out of our truck - she still wanted her $5. We declined. We encountered this same policy as we entered Minnesota and South Dakota. How good do you have it in the South!!!

Nancy, not really. Turns out this is just 'the way it is' and she was following the rules. It was our first encounter so we were a bit put off by it. Our experience 'up north' has been that most folks will not make an overture to be friendly but if you strike up a conversation with them they respond. An example is at the next stop in Illinois where the couple gave us fish and vegetables. It was us who initiated the first contact and they slowly responded over a couple of days. Not exactly like folks from the South (even Missouri) but not ok.
