Mt. Airy, NC

Origin of the town of Mayberry and hometown of Andy Griffith was another day trip. About 80 or so miles away close to the NC and VA border it was well worth the drive. The first photo (pardon the darkness) was taken in the old Cinema where a live radio broadcast originates every Saturday. Here a great little bluegrass band entertains the live and radio audience. Admission is free and there are typically two bands performing. The show has been playing continuously for some 50 years.
We had lunch in Barney's Cafe (try their Barney Burger) sitting at the counter and were entertained by the owner/operator. He was as friendly as you expect someone from Mayberry to be and was well satisfied that most folks came for the day to see the sights and perhaps spend the night and went on their way. It is still a 'sleepy little town' as you can see. Well done 'Mayberry'.

The Barney Burger was excellent! We had it and onion rings and it was all we could eat. They offered some great pies but we could not handle any more food!!!
